Why Pi Phi?
Kaila Bonawitz
I transferred to the University of Puget Sound my sophomore year and it was a nerve-wracking experience, to say the least. I was scared to start over. A new school also meant a new environment with new classes, new professors, new teammates, and new friends; the making friends part was what I was most nervous about. The only familiar face around campus was my older sister Keiana, who coincidentally happens to be a Pi Phi as well. My first semester at UPS, I lived on the ground floor of Oppenheimer with predominantly male-presenting individuals, many of whom were involved in fraternities on campus. They welcomed me to campus with open arms and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and explore Greek life. Stepping into Pi Phi during recruitment for the first time, I immediately felt a sense of belonging and safety among the warm smiles and welcoming atmosphere. Over time, Pi Phi became more than just a sorority to me; it became my home. Through my involvement in various leadership positions, including serving as the Vice President of Recruitment on the executive board, Pi Phi provided me with invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth, shaping my university experience in ways I had never imagined possible. Pi Beta Phi has brought me my lifelong friends and for that I will be eternally grateful.

Coming to Puget Sound from Pennsylvania I didn’t know anyone, and had not spent any time in the area. As I started to meet people, I began to understand that Greek Life at UPS was vastly different than what I have seen at other schools. As someone who had not previously thought about joining a sorority, it was a very welcoming crowd of people there to tell me “why not just go through recruitment.” Intending to go through recruitment without joining, and just meeting new people, I realized that Pi Phi is filled with so many incredible and kind people that I love to spend time with. After two semesters in Pi Phi, I found that Pi Phi is an intentional community of awesome, supportive people whom I have grown to love so much!

When I started my first year at the University of Puget Sound, I was honestly a little nervous and scared. Everything was so new and I didn’t know where I fit in. A lot of my close friends from home had joined Greek Life at their schools, so I decided to just try out recruitment to hopefully meet new people and see what it was like. During my first conversations with Pi Phi I instantly felt so welcomed, and really connected with all of the people I talked to. After that, I knew I wanted to be a Pi Phi. Pi Phi very quickly became a place of support, love, and kindness, and made me feel like I belonged. This is a group of people who care and uplift everyone around them. I have been able to learn so much already from these amazing people. Pi Phi was a pillar I could lean on throughout my first year; whether I needed help with picking classes or just someone to grab coffee with. Pi Phi has also given me a chance to connect with the whole Greek and campus community. I am so excited to grow and connect even more with Pi Phi during the rest of my time here at Puget Sound!
